Single: Babylon

Artist: Dead Method

Taken from their upcoming album, Queer Genesis (due to be released in September 2020), Dead Method address the oppression of the LGBTQ+ community head on in their assertive alternative pop anthem ‘Babylon’.

Straight off the bat, enchanting harmonies battle against the creeping bassline of the track and create an unearthly soundscape. The vocals are hauntingly beautiful in their calls for the welcoming embrace of Babylon, which Dead Method describe as a place of “self-acceptance and finding a home outside of what society told you the concept of home is”. Whilst the lyrics narrate a journey towards this space of belonging in troubled circumstances, the electronic beats that break up the otherwise blissful melody seem to mimic the struggles that LGBTQ+ people are faced with internationally.

Throughout ‘Babylon’ there is an unmistakably foreboding atmosphere that lingers through the track. Industrial at times, the high energy of the chorus shoots down the oppressive societal structures that inhibit queer people in a celebration of LGBTQ+ culture.

In sum, ‘Babylon’ is composed of an alluring dynamic soundscape, accompanied by striking lyrics. It is undoubtedly the uplifting and inspirational queer anthem that the world needs to hear right now.

Babylon is available for streaming on Spotify from June 26th.
